π Gulf of America? Trump Moves to Rename the Gulf
Yesterday, President Trump signed an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
Behind the scenes: The announcement was first previewed at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club on January 7th, before being formally announced in his inauguration address.
The big picture: In his first announced executive actions, Trump plans to change two major geographic names:
The Gulf of Mexico would become the "Gulf of America"
Alaska's Mount Denali would revert to its former name, Mount McKinley
Why it matters: The proposed renaming of the Gulf of Mexico signals Trump's continued focus on U.S.-Mexico relations and border issues as he begins his second presidency.
Driving force: Trump cited three key reasons for the Gulf renaming:
Trade imbalance with Mexico
Concerns over illegal immigration at the southern border
Drug trafficking into the U.S.
What's next: The executive order would direct the Interior Secretary to implement the name change across:
Official federal maps
All government documents and communications
Federal agency usage
The bottom line: This represents one of Trump's first major symbolic actions upon taking office as the 47th president, though the diplomatic implications remain to be seen.
