Summon the Heroes

By Carson B · September 1, 2026

This story ran in September 2026, so dates, hours, and details may have changed.

Next Thursday, September 10, the Sarasota Orchestra and the Van Wezel mark 25 years since September 11 with Summon the Heroes — one evening of music built around remembrance, and around the local first responders who show up for this community every day.

The program

Conductor Evan Roider leads the orchestra through Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Barber’s Adagio for Strings, and John Williams’ Summon the Heroes, with soprano Amy Owens singing Amazing Grace and America the Beautiful. Nate Jacobs — founder and artistic director of the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe — narrates.

Where the proceeds go

This one gives back close to home. Proceeds benefit four local organizations: Resilient Retreat, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Charitable Foundation, the Sarasota Firefighters Benevolent Fund, and the Sarasota Police Foundation.

Go

The concert starts at 7 PM, with doors opening an hour early. Tickets are on sale now — and given the occasion, this is one worth planning ahead for.
